Deafheaven Live from Crowbar in Brisbane, Australia

Live video of “Dream House” and “Irresistible”  shot at Deafheaven's first ever show in Australia at CROWBAR in Brisbane on  January 8, 2014.

San Francisco’s Deafheaven have been drawing rave reviews and creating insider buzz since their inception. The band’s 201album Roads to Judah won the hearts of metal obsessives and even earned the attention of Pitchfork, the de facto hipster bible. Creative lynchpins and founding members George Clarke and Kerry McCoy found themselves, perhaps surreptitiously, in the midst of an exciting wave of American artists blurring the lines between post-metal, shoe-gaze and black metal (no one really knows what to call the sound, they simply acknowledge its beauty).

For all the plaudits their music drew, Deafheaven seemed destined to become the latest “best band most people have never heard of” - but then, in 2013, something very strange indeed happened.

For George Clarke, pain – both psychic and physical — is part of his job as Deafheaven's singer and lyricist, and he wouldn't have it any other way.

His San Francisco band has won acclaim for its 2013 album, “Sunbather” (Deathwish), which toggles between sensual atmospherics and scorched-earth screeds, drawing a new map for heavy music that incorporates metal, the overdriven guitars of shoegaze, and acoustic tranquility. Clarke pushes his voice to extremes, even while prying loose intimate images and stories from his life.

Deafheaven last brought their shoegaze/post-rock/black metal blend to NYC for the 2nd to last 285 Kent show in January, but they were back in the area when their tour opening for Between the Buried and Me hit Long Island for a show at The Paramount on Friday (2/21). (The Kindred and Intronaut are on the tour too but the latter dropped off that show due to their van breaking down.) Deafheaven are the odd band out on this mostly-prog-metal tour, but Heavy Metal Cowboy caught the Virginia stop a day earlier and said there was still “a TON of crowd surfing and movement from the crowd during their set.” Pictures of the Paramount show are posted above.

Deafheaven will be back in NYC for Governors Ball in June. They also play other US festivals like Sasquatch, Pitchfork and Bonnaroo.

Village Voice Interview and Show feature for 2/21 in Long Island

Some names tell you all you need to know about a band: Slayer. Dee-Lite. Metallica. Pearl Jam, eh, not so much. But Deafheaven? Definitely. Black metal (Deaf) + heaven (shoe gaze) = a slew of critical acclaim and year-end “best of” nods for the band’s 2013 Sunbather, their second LP since forming in 2010.

Deafheaven frontman George Clarke, who founded the band in San Francisco with guitarist Kerry McCoy (guitarist Shiv Mehra, drummer Daniel Tracy and bassist Stephen Clark complete the lineup), cut his heavy-rock teeth on Bay Area thrash. “That’s originally how I got into more extreme metal, in 7th grade,” Clarke remembers. “Metallica being the entry level, then Slayer and Vio-lence and Exodus were my gateway.”

In creating the sound that would become Deafheaven, the singer’s vision was strong: “Genre-mixing was definitely a goal starting out. It took a while for us to find our exact sound, which you only get through playing and naturally developing.”

The key to making the music and band genuine, he believes, is the “ability to hear subtle similarities. I can hear a shoe-gaze riff and think, ‘Well, if you set that up and kept the same chord progression and put distortion over it and put this kind of blast beat on it, that could be a metal part.’ It’s having the know-how to see and feel little things like that.” Still, Clarke acknowledges that “practicing with transitions and making sure you’re fluid” is crucial. “It’s always going a be a risk, because people generally think some things shouldn’t be mixed.”
